Can a lawyer set for hearing date without talking to his client about it ?

Without more specifics, I'd say sure. What makes you believe this behavior was unethical? Perhaps a bit inconvenient if you weren't consulted re your schedule. But unethical? How so?

I have gained temp custody of my grandson last May and recently the biological mother has filed a motion to have case reviewed. I found out the day prior to my lawyer had me come into his office to discuss the case, the hearing has been scheduled . I had no idea of this. I wasn't told about it. I found out about hearing date from totally unexpected source.

Okay, well this is more of a communications issue. Your lawyer is (as you are surmising) obligated to keep you informed of what's going on.

Perhaps it's time to have a meeting, and for you to lay some ground rules (but be prepared -- you will probably be paying for the time being spent to keep you better informed).
