My ex-wife and I were married in Tanzania, but we live in the U.S. We got divorced in Tanzania as well. Although we still live in New York, we also got divorced in Tanzania through our religious laws. Are we considered divorced under US and New York State law?

@CuttyNYC,
I think you may already know this but, you're asking for a legal opinion. As in, the kind of thing you pay a divorce lawyer to give you. After all, if we gave you the wrong advice and just tossed it off the cuff, and you attempted to remarry and it turned out you were still wed (thereby committing bigamy, a crime), you'd have no recourse.

Which you would not like.

Go to a divorce lawyer and pay for them to research this as an opinion and, if it turns out you're not divorced in the US (e. g. if there is no reciprocity), you might as well have that lawyer work on your divorce as well.
