I've encountered this error twice now in the last couple weeks. Microsoft knowledge base only says that it results from corrupted system files and all you can do to fix it is reinstall the OS (rather costly error). The KB does not tell how the problem is caused or what steps may be taken to avoid it.

Has anybody else seen this error, and/or knows what can cause it?

The article doesn't list a cause because there are several thousand possibilities.

You may want to re-read the article. It doesn't tell you to re-install the OS at all. It suggests you use the WinXP "Repair" option.

With the demanding standards of our workplace, maximum uptime and minimum hassle once the system is deployed precludes us from allowing anything but cleanly formatted installs to leave the IS office except for compelling reasons. My supervisors generally frown on repair installs.

But, yes I believe that first part about the "thousands of reasons" answered the Q, thx.
