I think only starving dogs eat their own dung (and in central america) I've seen them eat the dung of others because of the undigested bits of nutrition found therein.
Flies are another matter. Remember the joke where two flies were sitting on a pile of dung and one farted? The other cried out indignantly: "Please, I'm trying to eat!"
