BERLIN - The most talked about man in Germany is a 65-year-old economist whose hot new book and sudden groundswell of popular support have the media dubbing him a folk hero. But that is not the only thing they are calling Thilo Sarrazin these days.

Some are also calling him dangerous. Sarrazin, a board member of the German Central Bank until he resigned under pressure Thursday, has divided the nation by postulating the theory that Germany is being "dumbed down" by Muslim immigrants and their children. Wielding statistics and scientific arguments both in his book and in public comments, he delves into territory largely taboo here since the Holocaust, suggesting that "hereditary factors" are at least partly to blame. Turks and Kurdish immigrants, he asserts, are genetically predisposed to lower intelligence than Germans and other ethnic groups, including Jews.

I Dont know. I do know that several Germans have over the years expressed to me a deep hostility to the Turks being in their country. I do take note that the French are actively expelling Gypsies who are roundly despised for much the same reasons that the Turks are. So this guy is going to be popular even if he is wrong. The central premise of his argument is plausible though. Certainly it is one that can be proven or disproven by science. If we don't know the answer we should find out. And not punish this guy for making an argument.

Well, regardless of whether the book's premise has any merit, it makes me wonder if there is a divine hand working in this, since it is almost like a divine voice has said to Germany, "If you did not like those other Semites, I will give you Semites you will really love." Who knew God could be sarcastic?

@Foofie,
We certainly see clearly that the Trauma of Nazism is still with Germany, with how they recoil in horror of any mention of racial genetics. This guy was made to give up his career because he had the gaul to make an unwanted scientific argument.

I rather think he was asked to resign from the bank (not "give up his career" - he is a 65 year old ex-finance minister and writer) because he wrote a book that caused a moral and political shitstorm affecting the bank's reputation. State and public employees of whatever grade often have clauses about such things in their employment contracts.

If a US Federal Reserve officer wrote a book saying that black people are genetically disposed to crime and watermelon eating, which gained nationwide notoriety, don't you think he or she would be under pressure to leave?

PS It's "gall".

sure he would, and if he came with a good faith basis for the argument that would be wrong. If a guy wrote an inflammatory book and it appeared to have no purpose other than too inflame then they should be fired, this does bring disrepute, it is not an honorable act. But to fire a guy who says something that he thinks is true, that he has evidence to support, because what he thinks is true is not socially acceptable??!! It is only in the last generation that such idiocy has been acceptable, shielding the people from truth that they do not want to know is not an honorable act, it is the opposite.
