They used these types of massive machinery in the making of the Chunnel as well as the Big Dig in Boston and also New York City Water Tunnel No. 3 project.

The economic benefits are greater as the cooling of desert areas and growing a forest of palm trees could help bring moisture to the region. Egypt would benefit and would help it economically in countering Islamic radicals from fomenting things there. Hosni Mubarak is in his 80s and won't be around very long. It would be better than boring across the Bering Sea.
