NFL Rule: TD Question. VERY COMPLICATED

Reply Sat 6 Dec, 2003 02:19 pm
A guy has 2 feet in the endzone, but he catches the ball which is underthrown and out of bounds on the 1 yard line. He catches the ball while leaning out of boundd with 2 feet in the endzone. I think it is touchdown other believe it is down at the 1 yard line. Pleasse prove the answer with the rule books.

TIA

No TD.

Keep in mind that the ball -- not the receiver determines.

By the way -- the goal line extends out of bounds -- so if he managed to get the ball over the extended goal line before going out of bounds himself -- it would be a TD.

But the way you posed it -- no TD.

Ball on the 1 yard line.

Good question. I am not sure however, it would seem to me if he gets both feet down and is in possesion of the ball in the end zone, since he was inbounds I believe it is a touchdown.

Frank is correct. The ball must break the plane of the endzone. In the described situation, the ball would be placed on the one yard line.
