I'm listening to "Raising Sand" an album of duets by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss (and produced by T Bone Burnett). It got kind of middling reviews in Rolling Stone- but I really like Robert Plant (actually more in his solo work than with Led Zeppelin - his voice always sounded a little too keening with them for me to really listen much to his singing) and I think Alison Krauss has a pretty, pure voice- and I love her fiddle playing - so I bought it.

I LOVE it. Song choice is wonderfully eclectic- everything from Eastern European inspired music to folk to old Everly Brothers, etc.
Musically, it's a great mix of Plant's kind of mystical sound with Krauss's American roots backgrounds. I like the mix of their voices. Although Plant said he had never harmonized much - I think he does a particularly good job melding his voice with hers.

The only disappointment for me is that there isn't much of her fiddle playing in evidence- otherwise- I'd give it five stars. Laughing

Magic - (title track of Bruce Springsteens new album with the E street band)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKdBaxA-aBc
Quote:
I'v never been the same after that day. it was like getting shocked into being by lightening or seeing jesus with a telecaster. i've been to 67 grateful dead shows but nothing beat that night for feeling like being alive and knowing it.

I've always been happy I was alive at the same time he was making music. I'm seeing him again a week from tomorrow- looking forward to seeing the band again- especially Clarence on his saxophone.

Magic
I got a coin in my palm
I can make it disappear
I got a card up my sleeve
Name it and I'll pull it out your ear
I got a rabbit in my hat
If you wanna come and see
This is what we'll be
This is what we'll be

I got shackles on my wrists
Soon I'll slip and I'll be gone
Chain me in a box in the river
And Rising in the Sun
Trust none of what you hear
And less of what you see
This is what we'll be
This is what we'll be

I got a shiny saw blade
All I need's a volunteer
I'll cut you in half
While your smilin' ear to ear
And the freedom's that your song
Drifts like a ghost amongst the trees
This is what we'll be
This is what we'll be

Now there's a fire down below
But it's coming up here
So leave everything you know
Carry only what you feel
On the road the sun is sinkin' low
Somebody's hanging in the trees
This is what we'll be
This is what we'll be

*what a writer-I don't think he gets enough credit for that...

Almost cut my hair
It happened just the other day
It's gettin kinda long
I coulda said it wasn't in my way
But I didn't and I wonder why
I feel like letting my freak flag fly
Cause I feel like I owe it to someone

Must be because I had the flu' for Christmas
And I'm not feeling up to par
It increases my paranoia
Like looking at my mirror and seeing a police car
But I'm not giving in an inch to fear
Cause I missed myself this year
I feel like I owe it to someone

When I finally get myself together
I'm going to get down in that sunny southern weather
And I find a place inside to laugh
Separate the wheat from the chaff
I feel like I owe it to someone

TTH- It's become one of my favorite Bruce Springsteen songs - which is saying ALOT for it- because I like alot of his songs alot. I've been listening to him since I first heard Thunder Road when I was fifteen years old and like Kuvasz (sp?) it changed my life. I feel like my life would be so much less if I hadn't ever heard him or experienced his thoughts and his music and energy - he's just exuberant and when you see him live - you do feel happy that you're alive and that you're on the planet with someone like him. I don't even know him, but he always feels like an old friend to me.

If you haven't listened to him before - you should give him a try- the stuff they play on the radio is not his best stuff- not by a longshot.
Born to Run is definitely a classic, and I do love it - but I actually really like his first album better- Greetings from Asbury Park- because I think it showcases his talent as a lyricist and also has kind of a simpler, more pared down sound - it's kind of carnival like and I like that. Everything he does has a different feel to it, so you just have to kind of experiment and see what appeals to you.

i have mixed feelings about this song

i'm sure Crosby wrote it as an anthem..but it just seemed silly..it didn't age well i guess

That song (although you'd never guess- I didn't till I read about it) is about how George Bush and company had (still have?-maybe not so much anymore) the population hoodwinked in terms of what was going on in Iraq as a justification for the war- and to a less specific extent how politicians in general and all over the world are able to do that to entire societies and the effect it has on the world.

PS Sorry for the missionary zeal - I'm just always trying to make Bruce converts -in fact I think if someone like him ruled the world it'd be a better place.

I'm listening to The Eagles new one- I went back and forth on buying it - I liked their old stuff SO much better than their new stuff- but then I heard the single: HOW LONG? an old JD SOUTHER song- and he's one of my favorite songwriters of all time - so I bought it- it's not quite as slick and actually better than I thought it would be. They've been working on their four part harmonies...
