I'm currently obsessed with Blinded by the Lights, of The Streets.

I somehow missed it two years ago -- we'd been playing Original Pirate Material tracks obsessively enough, but two years on I got the Fit But You Know It thing (and Dry Your Eyes), but otherwise his second album just kinda passed me by. (Yes, I know, now, that it went triple platinum, but I dont have radio or TV).

So, now, discovered this track after all. Musta played it two, three dozen times the last three days. Totally set the scene, no, went with the scene. Kept a blog post on it private cos its a bit harsh, and I was just contacting some stranger. But I put the song up at least now anyway.

God its good.

Video to it tells its own story, parallel to it obviously, but a bit harsher than the lyrics themselves (the song make it sound sad, but the vid is just grim). Both are here

That Streets stuff isn't even music. It isn't rap. It is spoken word overdubbed with samples. Sorry nimh but I can't get into that.

I gotta say nimh..there's not much you bring here that I like, but you're definitely in the vanguard; the cutting edge of edgy music...and I respect that. Very Happy

Heh ;-)

Amazingly, The Streets is a chart killer too. His Dry your eyes entered the UK charts at #1. His previous album, A grand dont come for free, entered the album charts at #2 and reached #1, and his newest, The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living, debuted straight at #1.

Blinded by the lights, the track I linked in, reached #10..

Course, thats all in the UK. <sigh>

Actually pretty typical of european taste in "music". Just weird.

If it was actually musical I could give it thought, but it isn't, and that video is a total waste of bandwidth.

Weird. Most of the techno "music" nimh turns me on to--I just think: This is why America is #1: Europe hasn't figured out music yet.

<kidding, but that Czeck song "Michael Jakcson" made me want to hit something.>

All that to say, I was really drawn into this song and the video-- I didn't think I'd like it initially, but it was personally evocative... I mean, by the time it was winding down, I was absorbed by the emotion it was trying to communicate. That doesn't happen alot. And, in three minutes--but yeah. To me the "music" was more like a good soundtrack for the vid.

Sad.

Hate to admit that I've been listening to Avenged Sevenfold a lot recently. Their album, City of Evil, is actually really good, both from a listening and musical standpoint - these guys may not just screw around, they might actually be musicians. They earned my respect when they started changing time signatures, and at the end of one song they actually go into a Spanish Flamenco-style acoustic duet. I was impressed.

Also Machinae Supremacy, if you want something hard, is great. Been listening to them a lot. Their website has most of their music: Machinae Supremacy

But I'm recently off my heavy metal kick, and now I'm listening to some Buddy Rich. Almost every song on Big Swing Face rules - now I want a copy of Wham! Live.

John Hiatt - Buffalo River Home

I've been taking off and landing but this airport's closed
And how much thicker this fog is gonna get God only knows
Just when you think that you've got a grip
Reality sneaks up it gives you the slip
As if you ever knew what it was taking you down the line

CHORUS:
Tearing through the cottonfields and bus shelters
of the South running helter skelter
down through the MississippI delta
with no place to call your own
mixing up drinks with mixed feelings
all along the paint was peeling
down to an Indian blanket on a pony
with no rider in the flesh and bone
looking for his Buffalo river home

I've been circling the wagons down at Times Square
Trying to fill up this hole in my soul but nothing fits there
Just when you think you can let it rip
you're pounding the pavement in your daddy's wingtips
as if you had some place better to go
or a better way to get there

CHORUS

Now there's only two things in life but I forget what they are
it seems we're either hanging on a moonbeam coat tails
or wishing on stars
just when you think that you've been gyped
the bearded lady comes and does a double back flip
and you run off and join the circus
yeah, you just let that pony ride
