I made a tape one evening so I could remember
the sounds the birds made in San Miguel de Allende square each
evening. As soon as darkness began to descend on us, it seemed
that every bird in the city started to hunt for "their" spot to spend
the night; usually in one of the many trees of a huge square in
front of the local cathedral. They sing & chatter, louder & louder
& louder, the sounds become a deafeningly roar; until - in one
instant - they all stop at once. The complete silence is almost as
stunning as the deafening chatter. The silence lasts until the rising
of the sun. Each bird found his or her pleasant spot on a limb to
spend the night. It became a ritual for me ... sitting in the square
at night with my jicama listening to the birds doing their "winding
down" ritual procedure until it became part of my own
winding down procedure. Part of me longs to return to Mexico.
I miss my darling grandkids too much when I'm gone, but I do
love it there.
