Andre Alexis plays music by Miriam Makeba, Bob Wills, and Dinah Washington on Skylarkin'. Andre also spouts a little poetry, discovers an unlikely track - Johnny Cash singing in German - and describes a General Store unlike any other.

this is just fantastic

OnStage from Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, a concert from the World series
"Fado! Portuguese Blues"
Catarina Cardeal, vocalist
Mike Siracusa, guitar
Jane Bunnett, saxophone
Spirits of Havana

She has been described as "…a smokey and sultry Portuguese fado songstress." The sensational, emerging vocalist Catarina Cardeal breathes powerful, new life into the fado tradition - Portugal's answer to the blues. ln the fado/blues ensemble known as "15," Catarina Cardeal and Mike Siracusa are pushing the definition of Portugese Fado to new areas that touches the universal exploration of blues - passionate Portugese song, with a contemporary twist! They're joined by their collaborator from two Global Divas concerts, the Juno award-winning jazz virtuoso Jane Bunnett and her band.

I'm still mad that I couldn't get a ticket to this, but listening to it on the radio isn't a horrid alternative.

I love love love fado.

picked up a stack of cd's at the library yesterday : buddy rich, bossa nova for lovers and a great 2-disk set "a tribute to black entertainers" ; it starts with "the moon shines on the moonshine" by bert williams(recorded 1919), goes to "it was a sad night in harlem' duke ellington and "t'ain what you do(it's the way you do it)" jimmie lunceford and ends with ""dance to the music" sly and the family stone. man, it's great stuff ! hbg
