Mardi gras means fat Tuesday, also known as shrove Tuesday. It's a catholic thing, a cultural thing not a gay thing. In northern places, is a much more somber event. Usually it was when you used up all the fats and sugars in preparation for lent. In southern places, it was the last chance to party. I realize this is a pretty simplistic explanation... In cities like Rio or N. Orleans it's become a competition of excess. Different factions vie to win prizes based on their extravagance.
I've known several men who wear women's clothing. Most of them are heterosexual. All but one have alternative careers, not the conventional 9-5 job.
Two of them wore masculine or kilt like skirts on a daily basis. Neither of them knew each other, they lived in different cities. One was a musician, the other was a comedian. I asked them why and both told me the same thing.. It felt more natural. Their boys weren't constrained - unlike women who were flatter, no protrusions. And both gave me lessons on the history of men's dress and couldn't understand why men ever switched. One actually started making the skirts full time for a while, not sure how his business is now, but it was booming a few years ago.
Another friend, a musician, also straight, liked the feel of the clothing. He made one butt uuuuggly broad, but whatever. He invited me to a crossdresser's banquet one night. The room was filled with men dressed as women, wearing mostly demure make-up and a lot of really awful, two piece skirt suits and fugly shoes. Most of the men, and there was absolutely no confusion, were there with their wives and girlfriends and the vast majority were 40+. There were a few drag queens but for the most part it was a very tame affair.
Another straight friend who was the only one with a normal job, also straight, was badly abused by his father as a child. He was always kind of an odd duck, awkward. I lost contact with him and a few years later I found out he was going through the process of becoming a woman.
- I caught him watching pornos on several occasions - don't ask... He was fired from a job because he showed up one day, rather suddenly, as a woman. The resulting lawsuit got him some press for his plight. I saw him a few years ago, and he was part way through the process. He wasn't pretty, but he was happy.
The last two were drag queens.
One is still a man (I think), but is only interested in "straight men", is always dressed in the finest clothes, perfect make-up, great shoes. She just pushes it up a notch when performing - think "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil".
One is loud and proud, brilliant, funny, completely comfortable in both personas, normal(for lack of a better word) and fabulous.. He has the best legs I've ever seen and is well over 6'8" in heels.
So to answer your question.. I have no idea, other than to say from my small selection of friends, they all seem to have a different paths and reasons.
As to drag queens being mean. Yup, most of them are catty and bitchy but it's part of the caricature. It's like the saying about the Irish.. they don't hate anyone in particular, they hate everyone equally. Drag queens are mean to everyone in general. Of course they can be sweet as pie too. They're entertainers, they can figure out the crowd like the best of them, or at least the really talented ones. Not everyone who puts on a skirt has the knack to be both. I find the acts hilarious. But then I'm a canuck, we regularly laugh at ourselves.
Sorry for being long winded..
