During the worst storm in living memory the ship hits rocks and sinks, about twenty miles from shore, Joe helps his friend Dave (who cant swim) to a small uninhabited island, Next day they find that all kinds of debris has washed up on shore including boxes of tinned food.
They wait a few days for help to arrive but no one comes, and so Joe takes the decision to try and swim to shore and get help. Dave waits, but after a week Dave knows that Joe didn't make it.
The days turn into weeks, all the food is gone, there is nothing to build a raft with, Dave accepts that he has no chance of survival, and then his luck changes and within 24 hours Dave is safely home.
He had no help from people or fish or animals, he cant swim, and he had nothing to build any kind of flotation device with.
How did he get home?
Saved ?
He was probably dreaming.
Sounds like it doesn't it K.Vee, but no he wasn't dreaming.
Saved ?

Was he saved by a helicoptore?
K.Vee

At only a mile away, he figured out that he could simply wade to shore. Or he simply uses all the boxes, empty cans and debris that washed up on the island to make a bridge.
Did I even get close?
Sorry Michael, I worded that wrong, the island is twenty miles from shore I have corrected my typo
My answer is that he died.
The seasons changed and the water froze.
Craven, your answers are usually spot on, even if they give me a furrowed brow for a while, however, that one went straight past me. The answer is simple and straightforward if not immediately obvious.
(I suppose what I'm saying is that it's a riddle)
Hmm, nice answer. It doesn't say it was sea, so it sounds like a possible one.
Given that water/ice is so big a fixture in this type of riddle I bet that's the answer hoped for.
I had hoped that this might run for a day at least,
answer is: lake michigan froze over and Dave just walked home.

Well, it's lateral thinking, so I went wide. My answer was that heaven = home (to some).
That was MichaelAllen's answer.
I think that he rolled into the water and was washed ashore
I was thinking that it froze.
