I gave you my best years
All you gave me were fears
I would treat you with grace
You'd beat me in the face
I tried but failed
I gave you love from the start
I could not see us apart
But you made sure I would know
That love you never would show
I tried but failed, I was wrong
I gave you A's in school
But still to you I was just a fool
I would do all of what you say
Still never did I get to play
I tried but failed. Give me a chance
I gave you hugs at night
But you just sat tight
Not giving nothing back
Except your verbal attack
I tried but failed. Please love me
I gave you my home
When you were left all alone
But you gave me a hard time
And my work was not worth a dime
I tried but failed
I gave you all I had
Nothing was good enough dad
I tried and did right
And some how it left your sight
You never tried you failed
Then on your death bed you laid
And called me over to say
How greatful you were for things I did
You told me, "I love you my great kid."
I tried and succeeded

That one hit me in the gut....it must be good.
Trying to give everything
To get mother’s blessing.
Happy to see your success
Let God give every access
To be in your mother’s kindness
All day, all year
Till the world bear
You in its lap…….

It did the same to me; you're right, poetry has to be good if it courts such strong emotion.
