If Approved, Microsoft-Yahoo Faces Antitrust Inquiry - News and Analysis by PC Magazine

What are peoples thoughts on Microsoft wanting to buy Yahoo? Not necessarily the potential for Anti-Trust suites but from the buisness standpoint.

I think it is pretty much a waste for Microsoft to go after yahoo. I really do not understand why they are trying to fight google head on. Microsoft is an OS company and they cannot even do that right. Maybe that is why they are attempting to get in to the online content buisness. Microsoft needs to make some changes if they want to stay on top. I think they have done a pretty damn good job with there gaming division aside from the hiccups early on. So maybe Microsoft is trying to diversify. Much like Apple has done with the iPod and such.

@Drakej,
they want to counter their advertising.

google's adsense is a 5 billion a year rev stream or something stupid like that.

msn adcenter and yahoo's YPN are a joke. their ads suck.

they realize this, and now they're trying to converge two crappy programs to try to compete. it won't work. it needs to be overhauled completely

@Drakej,
Exactly. Do you think it is possible for the Microsoft and Yahoo engineers to scrap there existing ad systems and start over? Do you think businesses will jump ship?

@Drakej,
thats the problem, both of them are hardly being used at all.

Yahoo can't target worth a **** (i was getting diaper ads on hondaswap...) and msn is closed, invite only. So, they are missing out on 99% of the internet.

Google is pretty much open, as long as you follow their rules.

@Drakej,
I tend to agree, I do not see Microsoft being able to re-invent it self to really take google head on.

@Drakej,
Well it looks like we don't have to worry about any anti trust suites as of right now being that Yahoo! rejected Microsoft.
