I hope the issue of Inequality of Women and Children fall into Social Issues. I'm no flaming feminist but globally women and children are being treated as live stock or non-persons. It's a pet peeve of mine, it enrages me to see women and children abused in the Name of "God" or "Allah" or what ever excuse. Here's my first article, keep in mind this is the year 2007 and women and children are being treated so appallingly by reigning governments.

Women: Beasts of BurdenLahore, Pakistan -

Blaring headlines -- arriving almost on a weekly basis now -- announcing yet another 'honor' killing or yet another rape victim detained while the perpetrator goes free show just how much the odds continue to work against the Pakistani woman.

Recently, the government decided to finally amend the criminal code of Pakistan's controversial rape laws that said a raped woman could be accused, in the absence of evidence of four male Muslim eyewitnesses, of adultery or fornication.

Women activists took to the streets, rejecting the amendment and calling for the complete repeal of the Hudood Ordinances, a bizarre set of Islamic laws devised by a military dictator in the 1980s in a bid to legitimize authoritarian rule by packaging it in "Islamisation". So long as these bad laws remain on the books, say activists, they will undermine the security of Pakistani women, resulting in grave miscarriages of justice. Some critics of the opposition say to accept moderate improvements and "realize half a loaf of bread is better than none at all."

In the 21st century, Pakistan is one of the few countries in the world with fewer women in its population than men. In rural Pakistan, women are treated as beasts of burden. They are fed on scraps but expected to do the bulk of the work. In urban society, women are considered a social burden, forced to leave school or employment after marriage.

Yet women have struggled and will continue to do so against all odds. Even if mobility remains circumscribed in the countryside, the information revolution is changing attitudes. Among urban women fortunate enough to gain an education, more and more are challenging, if not breaking, the glass ceiling in professions that once excluded females. Will women in Pakistan accept half a loaf in the 21st century? Not likely. They'll accept nothing less than complete freedom, complete equality, and equal rights.

@Red cv,
I can't imagine how difficult it must be to try and survive as a woman or child in a country that practices 200 year old Tribal laws and culture.

@Red cv,
I was in the Peace Corps in Tanzania , East Africa from 1965 thru 1969 , and saw lots of women in that siruation . Many were quite happy , but that was their culture . The ones that had been to school , or had finished school were a complete different story . Education and exposure to more modern ways changes the outlook drastically .
Even in Islamic countries , the women are speaking out more and gaining rights they should have had all along . This , by the way , is ONE of the reasons the extremists are so much against Westernization . It takes away the people they wish to keep subjugated .

@Red cv,
Do you really think they want to live the western life? I ask because, here in England women that have that choice use our system to fight to wear veils, dress all covered up, plus they walk behind their men...Some they do not even speak a word of english, they have been here decades!! Indeed we have signs in all those asian languages but not in european ones (spanish, italian, portuguese etc...)..Living here i really don't understand their attittude.:dunno: What do you think? How is where do you live?

@Red cv,
Sherman we are having the same problem in Canada, for the past twenty years Muslim females would wear a veil or hijab and after September 11 they now wear burkas. They make excuses like "It's part of our religion" it makes me "more modest" etc. but I believe it's their way of shoving the Extreme version of Islam into main stream society. Why now, it never use to an issue. Second generation Muslim women willingly allowing themselves to dress and be subjected (in private) to Sharia Law. I to don't understand this new "Fad". It scares me.

The rescue which was widely reported by UK-based charity Christian Solidarity International (CSI), Tuesday, said that the captives were mainly boys and young men captured by government-sponsored Arab-Muslim militias.The only Religion in the world that still practices forced slavory of women and children.

Is it really choice though? The Muslim communities are very close knit in most of the UK, and their community leaders hold quite a bit of command and respect over their communities.

@Red cv,
I agree Morningstarr, with all the freedoms Muslim women can have in the west they choose (more like forced by the males in the community) not to drive and to wear a burka and shun non-Muslims.

@Red cv,
Why single out Islam? Pick up a bible and read what Christianity has to say about women. It ain't pretty.

@Red cv,
What the Bible or the Koran say about women, and what their "readers" actually participate in are two different things entirely.

@Red cv,
Why single out Islam, well globally women and children are being beaten raped and victims of abuse so inhumane that I can't imagine living in an Islamic country without taking a gun to my forehead. Christian women aren't and if perchance they are we have criminal laws to protect them from zealots who harm them in the name of Jesus. Islam has Sharia Law which allows women to be beaten in the name of Allah and children are the property of the male once they reach five. I find this offensive so I speak out, I believe the women and the children of Islam "Matter" thus I speakout so it can't be hidden. That is the goal of left/left aka socialist, hide the truth. The true face of Islam is ugly and it needs to be seen to change.

Here is an example:

7 held for holding karo-kari jirga

By Mansoor Mirani

KHAIRPUR, Feb 2: Seven people were arrested in Gul Mohammad Shaikh village and adjoining areas on Friday for their alleged involvement in holding a jirga which had declared two women as karis.

Gambat police SHO Iqbal Jumani registered an FIR under section 310A, 201, 149 PPC on Thursday night against Gulzar, Qalandar Bux, Atta Mohammad, Shahnawaz, Ghulam Shabbir, Khadim Hussain, Mohammad Ismail, Ghous Bux, Miran Bux, Ali Hassan, all Shaikh by caste, and Maulvi Ghulam Mustafa, son of Ghulam Qadir Panhwar.

Reports said that Shahnawaz Shaikh had alleged that his daughter Farzana had an illicit relationship with one Ghulam Shabbir and his daughter-in-law Zahida with Khadim Hussain.

The jirga was held on January 2 at the Otaq of Miran Bux in Gul Mohammad Shaikh village in Gambat taluka.

The jirga decided to give four-year-old Sapna, daughter of Khadim Hussain, in compensation marriage to Abid, 10, son of Ghous Bux; and Abida, 15, daughter of Ghulam Shabbir, to Gulzar, son of Shahnawaz Shaikh.

After the jirga, Abida was married to Gulzar Shaikh.

Reports said that police had taken Abida into custody. However, police have not been able to find Sapna. Police said that inquiry was in progress.

Maulvi Ghulam Mustafa Panhwar, who had reportedly solemnised the Nikah of Abida, told reporters at the Gambat police station that he was not aware about the Nikah of Sapna or the holding of jirga.

Police also detained Ghulam Shabbir Shaikh and Khadim Hussain Shaikh who had been declared karo. Before the convening of the jirga, Farzana and Zahida, who had been declared karis, were divorced.

Translation a four year old was given away in marrage because a relative was sexually abused.

@Red cv,
Sinkening reality and based in the Quranic teachings. Muhammad is the role model. The first wifey was around his mother's age and then he turned to children. Alisha being 6, and then all the rest of the wifes and slaves and little boys...

Now with the QUran virtually unchanged and STILL being used verbetium to justify heindonous crimes and issuing FATWAS, it is no wonder that these practices are still going on strong. In fact, the message wasn't getting to Muslim troops and finally a law was put in place where young boys were no longer allowed to visit soldiers tents. I guess the smelly old fellas were keeping happy with these poor children...

If I accomplish nothing at least I've made some people aware of the treatment of women and children in Islamic Countries. However China, and Pakistan are just as guilty of horrific abuses towards women/children/males

The problem needs to be attacked at its core: Islam.

These barbarians will not change on their own. Their religion needs to be wiped out.

@Red cv,
Is it just me or does nearly every non-muslim reach the conclusion that Islam, or at least Extreme Islam is incompatible with any other way of life, for that reason either Islam prevails, or the rest prevail, noone seems to believe there can be middle ground. If we are not ready to protect our own beliefs what are they worth?
