The Hundredth Monkey
For those who don't know the story, heres a brief description.
In 1952 there was a glut os sweet potatoes in Japan. Scientists used the excess potatoes to observe what effect a new food source would have on a group of monkeys. They delivered the food by means of an air drop on the beeches of on Island but the sweet potatoes got impregnated with sand, making them virtually inedible. A young female monkey washed hers in a stream, gradually her playmates copied her and then the mothers started copying.
Another drop was made by the scientists to see what percentage of monkeys would wash the sweet potatoes. They all did.
This indicated a mass conciousness, but they didn't know the number of monkeys it took before all started washing the new food.
So they went to another island counted the monkeys and made another drop, What do you think happened ? they all started washing the potatoes.
This experiment has been used by some to promulgate the theory that we are all connected at our core and that if a certain percentage of people have the same desire, this will spread throughout the race.
Kabbalists also teach that we are really one creature, using the description of cells within one body and that as soon as a critical number of people unite and act as one body with a desire for the creator, the rest of humanity will feel that same desire.
Its easy to pick holes in the hundredth monkey theory, such as a washing monkey swam to the other island before the drop was made.
Does anyone here have a belief or theory that at our core we are connected and that a critical mass with the same desire can affect the whole.
