SO MUCH FOR "OUR" ENERGY INDEPENDENCE: Residents of California recently joined other communities in New York, Washington and Maryland in rejecting the construction of large, dirty fuel export facilities. People are starting to realize that the coal, oil, and gas industry's claim of securing "our" energy independence is really more about securing overseas demand for their dirty fuels.

Coal sales have slumped in the US and orders for new plants are being cancelled at an increasing rate, but rather than slow down its mining operations, the coal industry is looking to emerging economies like China and India to offload its product. Meanwhile, the oil and gas industry, faced with a fracking-induced surplus, is using export facilities to ship their fuels overseas.
