@salima,
salima, I don't know where you live now, but Americans have become quite
engaged in soccer in recent years, perhaps due to their own team entering the
FIFA cup. Most children play soccer (my daughter did) nowadays and it
seems to be a good sport for girls who are mostly excluded from football and
baseball.

@CalamityJane,
I agree that there is a lot of interest now, compared to years ago. Once, back in the early seventies, I brought a soccer ball back from Guatemala for my cousins' boys and they were un-thrilled. On the other hand, I have american friends who were soccer (aka futbol, football) coaches as early as the eighties. And didn't a2k's George coach soccer? On the name soccer, I've been under the impression that only americans call it that, likely because of the americans having american style football.

@ossobuco,
The name "soccer" is British in origin. I believe it dates from the nineteenth
century. The two big games were rugby football and association football, the
latter being the game we in the States call soccer. In the slang of the time,
the two became known as "rugger" and "soccer".

And, yes, I was a "soccer-dad" coach.

@George,
The origin of the game may well lie in late medieval times...there is a reference to the clergy wanting a game declared illegal because everyone wants to play it on Sunday....it sounds similar to a game of soccer. They had their way and the King banned it. Rather hard to imagine these days.

@Ionus,
That rings a bell; I'm going to look back on some of my old piazza notes. I'm thinking about the Campo in Siena, about which I've read much but didn't notate every aspect.

OK, I looked, it's not in my notes, and I don't have time in life to hit the bibliography.

@Dutchy,
It was a good game regardless, Dutchy! The Aussies played a civilized game.
We miss the Dutch game due to the time difference (too early for us) but
I am sure the Dutch will play exceptionally well. Very Happy

@CalamityJane,
Dutch played and won C/J, 2-0, but not very impressive, can do much better. They play Japan next Saturday, two contrasting styles, will be interesting.
