They are part of an architectural work in a city in Italy. The museum is in the same city. The city is not Rome. You are looking for the name of the city.
Sorry for the delay, I lost track of the thread, and Fealola, I am sorry for not being clearer.
I'll count this back and forth as four questions, sixteen left.

The age of terra-cotta building decorations in Italy actually began prior to the official 'Roman Empire' origins. Is the winged horse Roman or earlier Etruscan? It's obviously influenced by Greek architecture, but this one is in Italy.

Ha, if I answer that you'll get it right away. So I will...

A quick Google for 'etruscan winged horses' gave this:
Hint #1 - (the first one in a row)
It was a gift to someone.

Must be pretty big to be dark on this side and light on the other. Doesn't look like the Brandenburg Gate. Could this be one of the 'side' entrances to the Arc d'Triomphe?

It is big, that's a TWO lane street going through it.
Not Brandenburg.
Not Arc d' Triomphe.
It is one gate to a section of a city.
Not part of the old city gate.
Not Oxford.
Hint's=
It was a gift to someone.
It's named for the person to whom it was given.
You can smell the horses.

I think it's in Vienna. Somewhere near the riding / horse training school whose name evades me!
Name: dunno!

I thought it was Vienna at first. Not all that far north of northern Italy and the wrought iron reminded me.. (that is wrought iron, isn't it, or am I confused again?)
My business partner just went to that riding school last year, when she and hub went to Vienna. (He lived there til they had to flee when he was nine and he loves the city.)

margo and ossobuco,
You are both right. It is Vienna and the gate is called Michaeler's Tor for Prince Michael of the Hapsbergs. The Spanish Riding School is there - through the gate and to the right. I took the photo about twenty yrs ago and now use it as my desktop - that's why it's offset to the right a little.
You may choose who goes next.
