Not Mont St Michel - I don't recall any gardens there - or even much flat space - but then - it has been a while (?almost 20 years!)

Mini clue - this building is well known, because......

Mac - good avatar! Very Happy

Thanks margo - I like this avatar but may still play around some more.

The monastery at the top of Mont St. Michel has a garden in the middle, which is what this pic reminds me of. I'll look for a picture so we can compare. Very Happy

Is it in the south of France? (just noticing the red tile roof)

Yes, south of France

I have no recollection of the garden at MSM at all - isn't it funny how your memory loses things! Confused

Not a school

Summary:

In the South of France

Someone famous sort of lived here for a while - but s/he may not have been famous then

Not a school

I make that 12 questions to go.

I have to go to work - I'll check in later this morning, or lunchtime!

It was certainly standing in the 19th century - I don't know when it was built!

Not especially. It probably had religious associations, but that was not it's primary purpose

This building is only famous because of the person "imprisoned" here in 1889. He made it famous. He suicided the following year, but not here!
