actually, 'Canary' has nothing to do with canaries, but with dogs. they are dog islands. Why I do not remember...

The Presa Canarian (sp?) breed comes from those islands, I believe. I could take the time to research this I suppose .. .

Sorry Dag, dictionaries say otherwise : Étymol. et Hist. 1583 canari « sorte de serin originaire des Canaries » (Lettres miss. de Henri IV, I, 510 ds GDF. Compl.). Empr. à l'esp. canario « id. », attesté dep. 1582-83 (Fray Luis de Granada d'apr. AL.).

well, the birds were given their name after the Island. but the name of the island is derived from wild dogs. Here's what I found on Wikipedia:
The Canary Islands are supposed to have given birth to the Greek myth of the Garden of Hesperides.

The islands were named Canaria (Latin canis, dog) because of the descriptions of the large numbers of wild dogs roaming the islands, first reported by the Roman scholar Pliny. The bird canary was named after the islands...

That just says that Canaries (birds) originate from the island. (but they did not give it the name. Vice versa.)
