The Armenian Genocide

Before the Nazi's slaughtered 6 million Jews, before the Khmer rouge killed 1.7 million of their fellow Cambodians, before Rwandan Hutus killed 800,000 ethnic Tutsis, the Armenians of turkey endured mass slaughter at the hands of the ottoman Turks.

The centuries of Turkish rule reduced Asia minor, the epicenter of western civilization and Christendom, into a bloody Islamic cesspool which culminated in genocide by Turks against Armenian and Greek Christian populations.

The Armenian genocide, occurred when 2 million Armenians living in turkey were eliminated from their historic homeland through forced deportation and massacres by the Turks. As Turkish authorities forced them out of eastern turkey, Armenians say they lost 1.5 million people in 1915-23, during and after world war I. Turkey says the death count is inflated and that the deaths were a result of civil unrest. To this day turkey denies the Armenian genocide, but history cannot be hidden or rewritten.

Even Adolph Hitler cited the killing of the Armenians as a precedent for his own slaughter of the Jews two decades later.
"Kill without mercy!" the Nazi leader told his military on the eve of the holocaust.

"Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?"

@Alan McDougall,
and every year the Armenian lobby asks Congress to demand that Turkey take responsibility for this event. Loads and loads of money are funneled into this endeavor, but year after year the effort fails. Why?

(Now this thread actually has the potential for further discussion.)

Is the definition of genocide considering the numbre of Victims ?

Would it be a definition we can use for extinguishing animals and vegitation ?

Genus was mor than a tribe.

What about Eskimo's/Inuit and whales ?

We all commit / allow destruction of species

There is a difference. The other victims of genocide (Jews) did nothing to deserve what happened. But there is evidence that at least some Armenians were engaged in helping Turkey's enemies. That does not excuse what happened, but it is well to keep it in mind.

@kennethamy,
Millions of west Indian tribesman, the population of Tasmania..80 million Hindus..the human ability to kill is beyond comprehension. The only way we cope with it, is by measuring the time elapsed from its enactment. 7 million Jews don't appear quite so much after 70 years. 700 years and it will be ancient history of a barbarous time.

@mister kitten,
He shopuld regonize ongoing genocide by American orientated genocide. People starving because of on-even distribution of income. Fixation of wealth. Wealth has a responsabiliy; often forgotten. So with Burghers and their great-grand children.

That reminds me of another difference between what happened in Armenia and what happened to the Jews (say).

Not only is there evidence that the Armenians were helping Turkish enemies, but the Turks did not kill the Armenians just because they were Armenians, and for no other reason. But, of course, the Nazis killed Jews just because they were Jews, and for no other reason.

As I said before, none of this is a good excuse. It is a difference, though.

P.S. The same applies to your example. Of course, another difference in your example is that there is no mass killing anyway.
