Though I would post a link to a wonderful mapping dictionary. It allows users to see how words are related to other words and concepts. An excellent reference tool and a wonderful way to improve vocabulary and usage skills.

@Theaetetus,
that is a phenomenal find! thanks! When I was first started to write school papers, I used a method called "spider outline" which basically had the topic in the middle, the topic which branched out from them, and the subtopics that branched out from those. This looks just like that method. This functions as a perfect thesaurus. Also, it reminds me of spartan models for organic chemistry.

Still, great find!

@VideCorSpoon,
Indeed this is a great tool. The only two shortcoming I could find were that it shows no historical relevence (derived from other languages or influences) or etymological explanations. Otherwise it is a great explanation to learn to understand the width of the meaning of a word nowadays.

Thanks!

Smile

@Arjen,
Once upon a time--in a not too distant past--there used to be a plug-in for iGoogle called Map My Word. It was a far superior version to Visuword, with the capability to have the words sounded out by the computer, and also click on words and change the focus of the program to the new word (think Wikipedia). Now that program has been bought up and merged into the pay Internet or CD-ROM desktop version. Here is a link to the trial version of the Visual Thesaurus.

Thinkmap Visual Thesaurus - An online thesaurus and dictionary of over 145,000 words that you explore using an interactive map.

I think it still lacks etymology and history features though. The OED needs to make a version of a visual dictionary.
