Here is one of my current favorites. Thomas De Mahay, the Marquis of Favras was among the many nobility who tried to Help Louis XVI escape after he was captured by the French revolutionaries in 1790. He was subsequently convicted of treason and sentenced to be hanged. On his way to the gallows, the court clerk handed him his official death sentence. He turned to the court clerk and uttered, "I see you have made three spelling mistakes." Awesome. Just awesome.
