The european tournament have started! (YAAAY!)

The Groups
Country / Played / Goals (+/-) / Points
Group A
Portugal / 2 / 4 / 6
Czech Republic / 2 / -1 / 3
Switzerland / 2 / -1 / 3
Turkey / 2 / -2 / 0

Group B
Croatia / 2 / 2 / 6
Germany / 2 / 1 / 3
Austria / 2 / -1 / 1
Poland / 2 / -2 / 1

Group C
Netherlands / 1 / 3 / 3
France / 1 / 0 / 1
Romania / 1 / 0 / 1
Italy / 1 / -3 / 0

Group D
Spain / 1 / 3 / 3
Sweden / 1 / 2 / 3
Greece / 1 / -2 / 0
Russia / 1 / -3 / 0

So far:
Saturday 7 June 2008
Switzerland 0-1 Czech Republic
Portugal 2-0 Turkey

Sunday 8 June 2008
Austria 0-1 Croatia
Germany 2-0 Poland

Monday 9 June 2008
Romania 0-0 France
Netherlands 3-0 Italy

Tuesday 10 June 2008
Spain 4-1 Russia
Greece 0-2 Sweden

Wednesday 11 June 2008
Czech Republic 1-3 Portugal
Switzerland 1-2 Turkey

Thursday 12 June 2008
Croatia 2-1 Germany
Austria 1-1 Poland

The big news beeing:
Netherlands/Italy 3-0
Italy played way under their ability and Netherlands got away with a BIG W. Few people saw this comming and the question on if italy will be performing as badly against Romania (who played well against France) arises.

and
Greece/Sweden 0-2
Sweden (My homeland) also shocked the soccer world with their W. Zlatan Ibrahimovic made a brilliant goal with the help of veteran Hendrik Larsson's smart and quick pass. We played a good game apart from a few misses from the defenceive line with their passes. Greece's still a great team and they played well, didn't go all the way though.

This thread is for all discussion of the tournament, what ever the subject might be, just to keep the threads down some due to all the soccer fans on this site! Wink

Might also help the U.S readers become more interested in the tournament, although it's just europe who gets to play..

@Wizzy,
Allright, Here is my list of teams that I think are getting through past the first round:

Group A
Portugal

Group B
Germany

Group C
The Netherlands

Group D
Spain

Besides these I suppose some non-famous countries (like Italy) will qualify as well.

At this moment I think Holland is going to win, and I sincerely hope that we play Germany in the finals. It'll be great to beat them!

So, what do you guys make of it?

A & B I got nothing to complain about.

C on the other hand:
Wishfull thinking from you part Wink
I'd say France. Romania managed to hold out but Netherlands aren't going to be so lucky. If I was a betting man I'd be betting 2-1 or 3-1 too France on Friday.

And for D:
Oh man, wishfull thinking from my part: Sweden.
We're taking on Spain on Saturday but if we played as good as we did today, we're taking them down (we did beat them in the qualifying round with 2-0 you know). I just hope the defencive line finds a way to stop Villa so he doesn't repeat his three goals against russia on Isaksson (our fantastic goalie).

And is Italy a "non-famous" country? Razz

@Wizzy,
Who, what? Oh Italy..it took me a while to remember them. Wink

I haven't seen Sweden play yet, but if I am lucky I'll be home in time from work saturday to catch Sweden-Spain. It looks as if pool D is as interesting as pool C. Especially since Sweden beat Spain 2-0 in the qualifyers. I didn't know untill you told me so, thanks.

@Arjen,
Oh man, Sweden - Spain will be interesting, no doubt about it. Who ever wins that game wins the group so ofcourse it's exciting, just as Netherlands - France on friday, Germany - Croatia tomorrow and ofcourse Czech Republic - Portugal tonight!

But about the main event tonight (Czech - Portugal), I saw the Portugal/Turkey game and have to say that Portugal have to step up their passing game against the Czechs to win. Also Ronaldo will have to get his focus back and really work get his game to his full potential.

I mean, Netherlands do however have the upper hand as they lead by two points over France, but I would still place France as the winners in the game on Friday. And seeing how Italy played their last game, no way can they take down France! But then ofcourse comes the question, can the Netherlands win against Romania? I'd say that's a though one, both teams have been performing suprisingly well and that could be the game of the tournament Wink

@Wizzy,
I can't wait untill friday. Smile

You may think that France is hard to beat, but Zizou doesn't play anymore. That will make it about even chances I think. Smile

@Wizzy,
Well, I have to admit that this guy has what it takes. He even uses a number of the same tricks as Zizou. Check out youtube to see him pass people. Zlatan does the same thing.

Well, perhaps Holland will be meeting Sweden instead of Germany in the finals then..

@Wizzy,
My colleague says that as long as Zlatan is injured before he scores his first goal we'll be allright. Smile

@Arjen,
Well, I think that Holland is going to meet Sweden in the quarter finals if they lose from Spain and meet Sweden in the semifinals if they win from Spain. Did you see the match btw??

Boy did the French ever get a whooping! It is a nice country for holidays, but not one we should heed or anything. Hey, after this whooping perhepas they will respond in English when someone asks for directions. Smile

He does have some trubble with hes knee though, but it's all good, he can still beat Holland any day Wink

I must say that I am beginning to look forward to seeing Sweden play by the way. If I can manage I'll watch Sweden-Spain today..

@Arjen,
Yeah he's got some trubble with his knee, he's had that for some time... After he walked off we couldn't keep the ball up in their turf.. Spain deserved it, even though they made the winning goal in the second minute of added time.. But their goal where nice though.. Wink

Guess it will be the quarters =)

@Wizzy,
I don't want to take away from your little tournament here but I would like to say thank-you to the Dutch for lending us another coach who seems capable enough to read the talents of our players and assist us in our quest for glory. South Africa 2010.

@Arjen,
That shirt is ugly as Arjen. With a colour like orange you should use a beast like the, oh I don't know, the URANGUTAN. I don't actually just resemble the namesake in looks but behaviour as well. I have been following the competition as well. I like it that both Italy and France have been done over and I imagine a Holland v Spain final, if they don't meet sooner. Portugal are hot, while all the rest seem average. Mind you Greece won the last one so it isn't over yet.

@urangutan,
Spain is going to get it in the semi finals, just like France did friday. I do not know who is going to be our opponent in the finals yet. I was hoping for Germany, but I don't think they will be there to greet us. Perhaps Portugal indeed, but I hear Kroatia is playing well too. Smile

With a goalie like van der Sar I don't think anybody stands a chance though.. Smile
He should get a medal for his performance against France. Smile
