@Theaetetus,
As is true of most everything I write, the tale is taken from experience. This very day, I went to the store to buy a 40 so that I'd have a bit of beer to drink tonight and, sure enough, the guy at the counter told me about someone who buys a Colt 45 and five bags of skittles every morning for breakfast.
I like to take tid-bits like that and put them into some meaningful setting. A drunk who is worried that he does not have enough whiskey seemed like a nice foil of sorts for a guy who begins his day with malt liquor and skittles - the narrator probably has a problem, but the morning customer seems, by comparison, a great deal more pathetic.
You have experience as an editor. I would very much love to hear a critical assessment of this work, even aspects as simple as grammar, if you have the time.
Thanks for the comment. Having this little anecdote called interesting by someone who worked as an editor is uplifting!
