After appraising my whiskey stock, which proved to be woefully low, I designed a simple scheme to reinforce my evening's drunk with a forty ounce from the gas station across the street, and so I rummaged around for my gray woolen sock appropriated for the storage of lose change and counted out four dollars. I then crossed the street without shoes to protect my feet, expecting the familiar merchant to overlook my oversight of policy. From the large glass case I selected an old standby, a forty of Colt Forty-Five, then brought the beer to the counter.

"Birthday?"

And I told him. Behind the familiar merchant was an employee ready to leave for home. The merchant, ringing up my purchase, spoke to his employee:

"There's a guy comes in here every mornin' and buys one a these and five bags a Skittles for his breakfast."

"To each his own," replied the employee.

@Didymos Thomas,
Wow! Interesting story, and does not surprise me considering you were buying a 40 of Colt 45. Hell, they will kick your ass, but the corner store employees are used to a certain type of customer buying that type of malt liquor.

@Theaetetus,
As is true of most everything I write, the tale is taken from experience. This very day, I went to the store to buy a 40 so that I'd have a bit of beer to drink tonight and, sure enough, the guy at the counter told me about someone who buys a Colt 45 and five bags of skittles every morning for breakfast.

I like to take tid-bits like that and put them into some meaningful setting. A drunk who is worried that he does not have enough whiskey seemed like a nice foil of sorts for a guy who begins his day with malt liquor and skittles - the narrator probably has a problem, but the morning customer seems, by comparison, a great deal more pathetic.

You have experience as an editor. I would very much love to hear a critical assessment of this work, even aspects as simple as grammar, if you have the time.

Thanks for the comment. Having this little anecdote called interesting by someone who worked as an editor is uplifting!
