CD-ROM Problems

Please advise!! I run Win 98SE and my internal CD-Rom has now packed up. It's not even listed now in the device manager properties section, it's just vanished. Everytime I try and play a CD, I get the message 'There is no CD-ROM player attached.....CD player cannot start'. It was all working fine 2 days ago. I've tried the adding hardware wizard, but no joy there. It just won't play CD's of any kind.
The PC is three years old. Might there be internal wires loose, problems with the drivers or something else?
Hoping someone can help me on this puzzle Sad Question
Cheers
Rick

Does your BIOS list primary & secondary masters & slaves during boot up? If so what does it say is connected? Have you moved the computer recently? Added new software? New hardware?

Are there any mystery devices listed in the device manager? If so it might be a driver problem.

Yes check the cables. Don't just tighten them but pull them out & put them back in. Double-check that all master/slave jumpers on all your hard drives & CD drives are set correctly. Try moving the CD drive's cable to the other EIDE controller on the motherboard.

Is there any computer around you can connect the drive to, in order to make sure it's working?

Bummer.
They're dead easy to replace though. It will just slot straight in and you won't even have to worry about drivers as the ones built into Windows will take care of it.

Have fun. Again. Smile
