Does Western Religious Tradition promote fear of knowledge?

Is general western religious tradition based on a fear of knowledge?

Example: The Garden of Eden with God's threat that if we partake of the tree of knowledge we will know only misery and death.

Example: Prometheus stole fire (and other knowledge) from the Gods and gave it to primitive people.

Repeated themes of the evils of knowledge. Why?

In our heads we are glad that our cell phones and TV's work, but in our hearts, many seem to hide a naive and geocentric view of the Universe. We love to remind ourselves, in parable and song, just how much more important love is than thought.

I never thought of either of these as seeing Knowledge as evil. The "evil" is inherent in the act of theft and accessory acts (lying, deception, etc) - not in the knowledge component.

Hmmm. Not so sure about that -- esp. with the Greek myth. The Greek gods were unabashedly pety and jealous.

And doens't it seem odd that Buddha sat under the tree, and Christ was nailed to it? (Course, crucifixion was very much not a symbol in the Roman empire, but it's still quite a thing to fixate on.)
