delaying kindergarden pro's and con's

My son will be 5 by end of july and will be starting kindergarden. I have been thinking about letting him repeat kindergarden (at two different schools so he won't realize he is repeating) to make sure he is mature enough for first grade and to prevent retension at higher levels. He is a very smart boy but at this age very impatient. I was wondering if anyone can give me any input on this matter. I should add that the school counsuler is against it. thanks

@sherri2000,
If he's smart, he'll be bored out of his skin sitting through kindergarten twice. If you think that he's not mature enough or still too impatient to handle the school routine, why not give him another year at home instead of an extra year of school?
He'll be in school soon enough, but won't have another opportunity to have a year with you and you with him once school starts.

My son was a young five when he started school - his birthday is in August. I went ahead and sent him because he was smart and big for his age and socially and behaviorally mature and adept and he did fine.

But looking back, I have to say that if I had it to do again, I'd have kept him home another year - just because they grow up so fast and that time is so precious- and you can never get it back once it's gone.

Are there other options available to you?
We have 2 or 3 days per week, full day, extended full day, and even 1/2 day kindergarten session in our school district and pre-schools.

It used to be kindergarten taught social skills, but now they want these kids to start their academics - some even begin reading.

My kids were 5 in Oct. and Nov.
I wish i had held them back; they always seems just a little overwhelmed. But we didn't have all the options they have now. (They are now 42, 40 and 35 - it doesn't matter now)

You have some time. Great strides can be made over the summer. If he's able to sit still, take adult directions and can work with others, i.e share, cooperate, then he's ready. You can re-think this in August.
