@srbrown25,
You need to see another lawyer. How valuable is the painting, even damaged ? Do you have paper work where he advised you it was valuable ? Did he verbally put a monetary value on it ? Did you tell him how much you expected to get out of the settlement ? Did he tell you the usual amount for such a settlement and is the painting worth that ? Is the settlement amount in accordance with a reasonable amount given the circumstances ? You need another lawyer....

What did he base the value on for a damaged painting? Get another opinion from an art dealer and see if it is of value.

Sometimes a restored painting can be worth quite a bit more.

@srbrown25,
You should have asked for proof as to the value of the painting before signing anything. Your assume your lawyer is also not an art appraiser. I agree you should at least have a professional appraiser look at the painting to determine the value before stomping your feet and crying foul.

@srbrown25,
There must be quite a story behind the simple question, but why do you think your lawyer owes you anything? Did the lawyer guarantee that there would be any settlement? Did he/she promise there would be a specific monetary value to the promised settlement? If yes to both questions, you may well be owed something. Most lawyers seem short of guarantees and promises. If the results of an action were totally predictable, there wouldn't be much need for legal action, would there?
