At what point in the future will Microsoft and other companies cut off the support ties with legacy applications and hardware?

Can it be done? Should it be done?

Corporations cut off support of legacy software applications all the time. It's not unusual in the industry. The same applies to hardware and corporate support. Third parties sometimes pick up that support, for better or worse.
