Why aren't we talking about "Draw Muhammad Day?" May 20th

You know, the "Draw Muhammad Day" is silly, but not because it might offend people. Their taking offense to this is their problem and the rest of the world should not have to cower to it.

Some people are offended by seeing a black man and a white woman holding hands. Should they not do so to avoid offense? No! The people who get offended are the ones in the wrong. Same with those who are offended by drawing Muhammad. And that some of them are going to far as trying to kill people who do it is itself the reason for taking a stand against it.

That being said, I think things like drawing Muhammad as the pedobear (like the thumbnail of the video in the OP) is unnecessarily trying to offend and I would prefer a "draw a respectful image of Muhammad" day as it would make a better point and prevent many Muslims from thinking the point is offense.

Yes, I meant to say earlier, I DO think Thunderf00t depicted Muhammad as the Pedobear on purpose, intending a response of outrage. (See video 1st page of thread.)

My Muhammad "drawing" was a not-very-happy-looking emoticon. For those of us without drawing skills, a blob or a stick figure would do fine.

I think it is important for those of us in the US to stand up to death threats which are expressly made to prevent Free Speech. We cannot allow ourselves to be silenced by fear.

I think that's equally important for those who value freedom everywhere (though it will almost certainly be less painful for us to maintain it than it will be for others to aquire it; it is work that needs to be done.)

That kind of sums it up for me.

I thought it was a fabulous idea at first...then I realised the bigots would use it to do really nasty things.

Just drawing a reasonable or light-hearted Mohammed seems to me a great thing to do. We have generally managed to stop other religions which might have been inclined to do so from slaughtering people who offend them, and I think that was a truly majorly important step, and one we need to take with radical Islamists.

But the nasty side is why I have signed the peition supporting those who have spoken out instead.

I might pop a nice Mohammed in here on the 20th though.

It's so not about when people get offended...it's about when they kill/threaten to kill/menace people when they ARE offended.

Free speach is to be allowed to say what I think, but it does not mean I can go around and insult people.
We have now PC, which means we cannot and should not insult people because of the race, handicaps, being fat or whatever, but as soon as it comes to religion we seem to be able to call people idiots and all kind of things because they belong to a religious group.
Making a drawing of Muhammed is an insult to Muslims, some might not care others will be insulted. The ones who do not care might side with the others.
We have seen what it leads to in Scandinavia.
We can be critical of burkas, forced marriages and other things and stop them in our country because it is against the law - that is part of free speach.

Exactly ! I was milking for that point. There is nothing wrong with being offended, many people are deeply offended at child molestation. Are they justified in killing if the courts wont do anything ? If and when do you take matters into your own hands ?

The laws of most countries allow for provocation when people fight. These laws never extend to serious injury though, but only involve a one punch type scenario. Even Islamic law does not allow for someone to murder for insults.
