like djjd said, those who subscribe believe there is an internal sun. A small one which in all accounts (none of which have been verified as more than a fictional diary) is referred to as the smoky god, due to the haze of clouds or something surrounding the inner sun.

I've read the history from what I could gather on it as well, the folks who were pushing it back in the day weren't at all disreputable.
As with most things, I believe it may be a combination of fiction tales, but those tales are roughly based on some kind of truth or experience we can't explain or even see.
For example: there have been hidden shafts discovered in south america leading into unknown caverns and others, apparently inhabited at one time by the inca and other civilizations.

I know for a fact the Earth is hollow. I once read a comic book about Scrooge McDuck at the Earth's core. The inhabitants down there can look amazingly like great round stones. Some were red. I don't recall if they all were the same color. Carl Barks would not lie.
