My Chow Chow seems to have developed a digestive dislike to Costco's Kirkland Super Premium Adult Dog Food in that it causes diarrhea. If I switch to a mixture of boiled liver and white rice it clears up, but now I have to find a food that works for him and does not break the bank etc.
I have fed a number of dogs for years using Costco's Kirkland Super Premium Adult Dog Food with no problems, and to the best of my understanding it's a good quality dry dog food.
I do not want to go some sort of raw food, complicated, time-consuming, expensive route.
Think about it, worldwide there are millions of people starving, diseased, malnourished and war-ravaged so I am not wanting to treat a dog better than I would a human (heck by many standards I already am by default).
Suggestions?
@Chumly,
I love Iams - they have a Healthy Naturals Lamb and Rice that's good for easy digestion.

@Chumly,
Mix some rice into the Kirkland food until the dog's digestive system adapts metabolically to the food. Then slowly wean the dog off of the rice as you go along.
You could also try Pepto Bismol tablets to help prevent/cure the diarrhea. They worked well to help settle my dog's rare bouts of the runs.
@mismi,
To the best of my understanding the Lamb & Rice Iams would be much the same as Costco's Kirkland Super Premium Adult Dog Food because it's also Lamb & Rice. Most dog foods are made by just a few producers such as Diamond.
@mismi,
How does it taste? I wouldn't think it would be fit for human consumption.
@tsarstepan,
I have (for about a year now) mixed white rice into the Kirkland food but it never has been 100% satisfactory. I would much rather find a food that agrees with him then mask the symptoms with bismuth subsalicylate.
@Chumly,
I wasn't suggesting it be an ongoing thing. The Pepto Bismol is to be used for the rare occasion of diarrhea. by all means change the food if the dog doesn't adapt to it after using up the bag or two. Have you tried Paul Newman's brand of organic dog food? It's pretty inexpensive and it comes in chicken and rice flavors and Senior formula as well.
@Chumly,
mebbe he is allergic to wool.
(my animals won't eat lamb, but it is for religious reasons only)
good luck chum.
@mismi,
We use the same for our Lilly. Iams is also our veterinarian's recommendation.
I give my dog a combination of a can of Pedigree and a packet of Moist and Meaty. Because she is active, and weighs over 70 pounds, I give her a few snacks during the day.
@edgarblythe,
We use Pedigree as well - my dog's breed should not use Iams as it has caused their coats to look more brown rather than the jet black color their coat should be. But my cats eat Iams.
@Linkat,
My dog has a very shiny soft coat. Thick for winter.
@edgarblythe,
And mine is the opposite of yours (not the shiny coat) - but size-wise - he is 14 pounds. Coat that looks like a black bear.

Has your dog had problems with diarrhea for a year? if so, what has the vet said about it?
@ehBeth,
On a rice and liver diet no problems at all so we figure it's food related.
@Rockhead,
Does iron or the lack of cause doggy diarrhea?
@Chumly,
I'd ask the vet that...
liver has lots of iron in it. (i have to get mine somewhere else, as liver is nasty)
is the dog as squeamish about a vet visit as you are?
