Ahem. As some of you know, I have a new computer.
Sometimes, when I click on my ISP icon to connect (I have dial-up, of course!) after I turn the computer on, it responds immediately. Sometimes, there is a short delay, sometimes a long one.
If there is a delay, there is a sort of computer working sound for a bit before it comes on.
Ought I to worry?
Anxious in Adelaide.
Dear Anxious,
I sometimes experience a similar delay with my AOL. I'm told it has to do with the amount of emails I have accumulated and the time it takes for the PC to sift through and sort it. I've noticed that when I clean out the mailboxes and do a defragmentation of the hard drive, the delay does indeed get shorter.
Not sure if the same explanation and solution works for you. Are your mailboxes stuffed full of love letters from secret bunnykin?
Er - no.....sadly.
So your connect icon will not respond too, eh? Hmmmm - I have defragged only recently, and I delete email regularly. Hmmmmmmm.
The delay seems to be becoming more consistent.
um, are you trying to get in as soon as the desktop shows up? cuz, like, you're computer may take a while to get to doing things, even though it looks like its ready, particularly if you're running xp.
Ah - it IS running XP! So - this is normal? Thank you!
Still, it oughta drop other stuff when its mistress calls...........lol!

My sister just got a new XP box. It takes a while to do anything once the desktop shows up after a start-up.
I would say normal.
Can you renice in windows? what about with Cygwin?
That question wasn't for you dlowan. Any power users know if Cygwin supports renice?
Jpowell - It may pay for you to ask this as a new question - it may not be noticed here.

Maybe it needs a good whipping

It's not a huge deal. I don't really care to much. It was curiosity.
As long as my Titanic DVD works in the morning, I'm cool.
Deb chan, to speed up windows bootups you should do things like disabling unnecessary windows services and disabling a bunch of those programs that love to start themselves every time your 'puter starts (most of the culprits put little icons in the bottom-right corner of your screen). If you don't know what windows services are you should prolly leave them be, but see if you can figger out how to disable most of those icons in the corner.
I WUV me little icons!
They's cute as cute can be!
I wuv to see them sitting there -
XP hides them from me.....Waaaaaah!
Oy! Youse boys! Youse made me li'l computer thread all horny and such! tsk tsk.
Now - we have the REAL difference 'twixt mins and wimmins - bedamned to the flaps of flesh and stuff - you guys like no extraneous bells and whistlesy thingies getting in the way of your puter's warm-up routine - we wimmins are happy to let the little dear stretch and yawn herself to wakefulness....
Reminds me of something - what can it be.....it is quite an important something, too...
I'm sure this has been covered..But for fun..
Disable Messenger like this:
1. Click on the "Start" button.
2. Right-Click on "My Computer"
3. Choose "Manage" from the menu that appears.
4. In the left column Highlight "Services and Applications"
5. In the right column Double-Click on "Services".
6. Double-Click on the service called "Messenger".
7. Click the "Stop" button to stop the service.
8. Change the "Startup Type:" to "Manual"
9. Click "Apply".
10. Click "OK".
11. Close "Computer Management"
This is to get the annoying pop-ups to go away. Not the web ones, but the other ones.
now - THAT pop up I hate!
AND - what is this about? I have TWO Messengers! One that lives in my email program - one that I downloaded, as instructed, which CLASH!!!!!

The one I mentioned above is the one that says..
If you want to get rid of this annoying **** visit
www.****.com
My sisters computer gets these all the time. Maybe a north america thing.
Doing the above won't disable Instant messaging.
It's a totally different thing that should only be used messaging on local networks.
That doesn't even make sense to me..GodSpeed..
EH???
Yup, the Windows Messenger Service (which facilitates those annoying popups) is unrelated to MSN Messenger.
It's a completely superfluous feature for standalone systems, and home networks probably won't need it either.
oh.
And, just as a matter of interest, my fingers were not ON your nipples!
