I was given a laptop with a 40 gig hard drive which is partitioned to two 20 gig partitions.

How do I remove the partition so itis ONE hard drive of 40 gigs?

Let me second this question.

I think one would have to reformat the entire hard drive then reinstall ones Operating System.

Besides, you not going to get the entire 40 gigabyte hard drive to use. You still need some space for the OS itself.

There are a number of freeware programs that you can use to accomplish this. The one I'm most familiar with is "gparted". You download the disk image, burn it to a CD or DVD, then boot to it.
