Just exactly what I am supposed to call these things that I have been calling all sorts of different names ever since I discovered that they existed?
I would like to know the best way to refer to them. Thanks.

@drillersmum,
All of those names are correct. If you feel you must settle on one, say USB drive. Just remember that some external hard drives can connect via USB, so even that does not completely prevent confusion.

@engineer,
"USB flash drive" if you want to disambiguate.

("Flash drive" used to be sufficient, but they've started coming out with SCSI-based flash drives.)

I call them "thumb drives" because that describes the way I use the things. It is a drive (i.e. I can store data on it) that is the size of my thumb.
