Speakers for HP Pavilion a1550y

The speakers for my computer (HP Pavilion a1550y) are pretty crummy, and with bad hearing I can't crank the volume up enough to listen with any pleasure. I'm looking for something with a wider volume range, though preferably not too heavily amplified bass. I know I can adjust balance, but I'd like to start with something that doesn't need a lot of jockeying back and forth.

I'm not looking for super duper expensive speakers, something mid-range pricewise would be fine.

@Tomkitten,
Almost any aftermarket speakers over $20 sound like they would fit your description to me.
