I live in L.A.. My family had a discussion yesterday,trying to reach a family agreement about whether it's a good idea to punish our children in order to teach them.
Do you think parents should be responsible for assigning any punishments to their children?

No, but the same as u teach them how to speak English,
u shoud give them a sense what is reasonable conduct
or appropriate conduct; e.g.,: if u hit someone, expect to get hit back
and explain elementary points of law, e.g. red lite means stop;
its against the law to steal or to assault anyone, etc.

If it were me,
I 'd tell him what I believe is good n bad, right n rong.
U have free speech.

Yes.

Parents who don't assign punishments to their children are responsible for raising little sociopaths.

@Ticomaya,
Ditto - children need to learn there are repurcussions for their actions. Safer for them to be punished by a parent (ie grounded) than by other real life means.

For example when I was a child, my neighbors used to let their children run around where ever they wanted - this included a toddler. Guess what - the poor child was struck by car and seriously injured. Fortunately he physically recovered - after that the parents went overboard in the other direction.

I believe in discipline.

Punishment? Only for really serious problems.

@boomerang,
I guess it is in the defination - here I am referring to punishment in the same light as discipline. Appropriate punishment/discipline to be precise.

@Linkat,
Re: definition, I also don't get the "assign" part of this. It makes me wonder if it's about weird punishments, like parading up and down the street with a sign or something.

@sozobe,
Yeah that is a bit odd - I guess we need a little more info on the issue.
