Marmaduke sounds vaguely familiar. Was he a cartoon moose from the depression era?

Haven't the movie makers always done this? I mean, aren't most movies made from screenplays that are adapted from books or comic books or some other idea? Isn't it relatively rare for a movie to be an original screenplay.
