Ever have one of those favourite CDs which you played to death at the time, then lost all interested in because you knew it inside out & it held nothing new for you? That was my experience with Graceland, which I discovered & bought before it was all over the airwaves. I really loved it when it was new & fresh. Then didn't listen to it again for years & years...
Anyway, I heard this song again while I was driving yesterday & thought to myself : What terrific lyrics. That's a wonderful song! Which inspired to to find it on youtube & check out the lyrics again. Rather a nice blast from the past! Smile

A man walks down the street
He says why am I soft in the middle now
Why am I soft in the middle
The rest of my life is so hard
I need a photo-opportunity
I want a shot at redemption
Don't want to end up a cartoon
In a cartoon graveyard
Bonedigger Bonedigger
Dogs in the moonlight
Far away my well-lit door
Mr. Beerbelly Beerbelly
Get these mutts away from me
You know I don't find this stuff amusing anymore
If you'll be my bodyguard
I can be your long lost pal
I can call you Betty
And Betty when you call me
You can call me Al

A man walks down the street
He says why am I short of attention
Got a short little span of attention
And wo my nights are so long
Where's my wife and family
What if I die here
Who'll be my role-model
Now that my role-model is
Gone Gone
He ducked back down the alley
With some roly-poly little bat-faced girl
All along along
There were incidents and accidents
There were hints and allegations

If you'll be my bodyguard
I can be your long lost pal
I can call you Betty
And Betty when you call me
You can call me Al
Call me Al

A man walks down the street
It's a street in a strange world
Maybe it's the Third World
Maybe it's his first time around
He doesn't speak the language
He holds no currency
He is a foreign man
He is surrounded by the sound
The sound
Cattle in the marketplace
Scatterlings and orphanages
He looks around, around
He sees angels in the architecture
Spinning in infinity
He says Amen! and Hallelujah!

If you'll be my bodyguard
I can be your long lost pal
I can call you Betty
And Betty when you call me
You can call me Al
Call me Al

@msolga,
Liked this one a lot, too, at the time.:

I met my old lover
On the street last night
She seemed so glad to see me
I just smiled
And we talked about some old times
And we drank ourselves some beers
Still crazy after all these years
Oh, still crazy after all these years

I'm not the kind of man
Who tends to socialize
I seem to lean on
Old familiar ways
And I ain't no fool for love songs
That whisper in my ears
Still crazy afler all these years
Oh, still crazy after all these years

Four in the morning
Crapped out, yawning
Longing my life a--way
I'll never worry
Why should i?
It's all gonna fade

Now I sit by my window
And I watch the cars
I fear I'll do some damage
One fine day
But I would not be convicted
By a jury of my peers
Still crazy after all these years
Oh, still crazy
Still crazy
Still crazy after all these years

I've never actually paid such close attention to the lyrics of this song, though I don't know how many times I've heard it. Wonderful!

The Boy in the Bubble

It was a slow day,
And the sun was beating
On the soldiers by the side of the road,
There was a bright light,
A shattering of shop windows
The bomb in the baby carriage
Was wired to the radio,
These are the days of miracle and wonder,
This is the long distance call,
The way the camera follows us in slo-mo
The way we look to us all,
The way we look to a distant constellation
That's dying in a corner of the sky,
These are the days of miracle and wonder
And don't cry baby don't cry
Don't cry,

It was a dry wind,
And it swept across the desert
And it curled into the circle of birth,
And the dead sand,
Falling on the children
The mothers and the fathers
And the automatic earth,
These are the days of miracle and wonder,
This is the long distance call,
The way the camera follows us in slo-mo
The way we look to us all o-yeah,
The way we look to a distant constellation
That's dying in a corner of the sky,
These are the days of miracle and wonder
And don't cry baby don't cry
Don't cry

It's a turn-around jump shot
It's everybody jump start
It's, every generation throws a hero up the pop charts,
Medicine is magical and magical is art think of
The Boy in the Bubble
And the baby with the baboon heart

And I believe
These are the days of lasers in the jungle,
Lasers in the jungle somewhere,
Staccato signals of constant information,
A loose affiliation of millionaires
And billionaires and baby,
These are the days of miracle and wonder,
This is the long distance call,
The way the camera follows us in slo-mo
The way we look to us all o-yeah,
The way we look to a distant constellation
That's dying in a corner of the sky,
These are the days of miracle and wonder
And don't cry baby don't cry
Don't cry don't cry

oooooooooEmmmmmmmmmmm........

Goodbye, Dennis Hopper.
Strange, looking at this clip, Easy Rider looks like a long, long time ago.

a fave band of mine

Superchunk is an American indie rock band from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, consisting of singer/guitarist Mac McCaughan, guitarist Jim Wilbur, bassist Laura Ballance, and drummer Jon Wurster. They were one of the bands that defined the fertile Chapel Hill music scene and culture, and their records received critical acclaim. Their energetic, high-velocity style and do-it-yourself ethics were influenced directly by punk rock, and they are today considered one of indie rock's definitive bands.

Mac & Laura also run Merge Records, one of the most successful indie labels in America (and one of my favourite labels)

jeff mangum, the main man behind neutral milk hotel, read the diary of anne frank on a flight home from a tour of his first album and immediately set about writing his magnum opus in the aeroplane over the sea

What a beautiful face I have found in this place
That is circling all round the sun,
What a beautiful dream that could flash on the screen in a blink of an eye
and be gone from me soft and sweet
Let me hold it close and keep it here with me.

And one day we will die and our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea,
But for now we are young let us lay in the sun,
And count every beautiful thing we can see,
Love to be in the arms of all I'm keeping here with me.

What a curious life we have found here tonight,
There is music that sounds from the street,
There are lights in the clouds,
Anna's ghost all around
Hear her voice as it's rolling and ringing thru me,
Soft and sweet!
How the notes all bend and reach above the trees.

Now how I remember you,
How I would push my fingers through your mouth to make those muscles move
That made your voice so smooth and sweet,
And now we keep where we don't know
All secrets sleep in winter clothes

With one you loved so long ago now he don't even know his name.

What a beautiful face I have found in this place that is circling all round the sun
When we meet on a cloud I'll be laughing out loud,
I'll be laughing with everyone I see,
Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all.

@djjd62,
I'm so glad you posted the words to the first piece, djjd. They are quite beautiful. I'm going to have to play that again. A number of times.

You know, I'd never heard of neutral milk hotel before now. Thank you for the introduction. That was a real pleasure.
