I am taking my annual trip to Mexico in a couple of weeks. I want to get a computer for my nephew. I know lots about getting a good inexpensive computer here... I know very little about how to get a good inexpensive computer there. I am planning to spend between $300-$400 total on a desktop system.
I have a couple of options (in each case, I will be setting the computer up for him when I get there).
1) I could buy a computer from a US discount company (like Tiger Direct) and have them ship it. The problem with this is that Tiger Direct doesn't ship to Mexico. Does anyone know a similar company that does?
2) I could buy a computer here and then ship it myself. There are rules and duties. Has anyone done this. I looked on the customs page and after staring at the rules for a while, it was still difficult to figure out how much shipping would actually cost.
3) I could bring the computer down myself. I will be flying to El Paso and crossing the border on foot (where someone will pick me up in Juarez). I assume I will have to pay some duties. Does anyone know how easy/expensive this is?
4) I could buy from a Mexican company. Does anyone have any recommendations on a decent company to order good, inexpensive (perhaps refurbished) computers?
Any thoughts on the easiest/cheapest way to do this?
I shipped stuff from Mexico to Canada. Very expensive, it's consider international but to the states it's not. I was told it was much cheaper to send stuff between the US and Mexico. A good friend of mine does this a lot. He sends stuff to El Paso and then picks it up, or resends it up to Canada. Believe it or not, this is the cheaper solution. Most of the big shipping companies are in Mexico. We used DSL.
I would buy the computer in El Paso and walk across the border with it. Why not buy a laptop in stead of a desk top? I find they are just as good, more convenient.
You are probably best off buying something in Mexico. You can get American brands for a lot less than you would pay here. I have a girlfriend who lives part time near Mexico City and I know she has done the opposite by buying computers in Mexico and shipping them back to the states. She does this because equipment there is much less expensive than the same item in the US. Sorry I can't give you more details. I just know as much as she has told me.
@ebrown p,
Walmart, Costco and such that sell cheap computers have branches in Mexico that sell the same types as in the US.
If you was giving him a laptop instead of a desk top I would had just buy it here and bring it along as my personal laptop.
I alway travel with my laptop into Mexico without problems.
