Hello
I have asked this question on another forum - but i would like to see the opinions of other ppls to get a better idea.

Ok - a bit of background...I'm in year 11, studying in Australia - and near the end of next year (year 12) i will need to chose an uni course.

the problem(s) is this:
I want to do Software Engineering - but I'm not sure about the career options afterwards.
My parents want me to do Medicine.

what do you think i should do?
i'm leaned more towards Software Eng. but the grim outlook of getting a career is sort of pulling me back

all comments welcome Very Happy

Do what you want to do, not what your parents want you to do.

To be honest, neither software engineering, nor medicine will go out of fashion in the foreseeable future !! Smile

Why not go to the careers advice at the closest uni? They should have pretty good info on whether software Eng jobs are available.

Medicine you'll always get a job, but it's one hell of a slog to get there.

pyko- The only people who ought to become doctors, are those who have a "calling". Unfortunately, that concept has all but died out in medicine in the last few decades. If you are not impelled to "heal", do your potential patients a favor, and go into another field.

As Gautam said, software is not going away. There will always be jobs for bright people.

Have you thought of biomedical engineering? That career combines both medicine and engineering, and as I hear tell, is pretty lucrative. Check it out!

P.S. Many parents have a "thing". about their kids becoming doctors. It's a status issue. Don't allow their desires to make up your mind for you. Good luck!

Yep, I agree with phoenix. In my case, my great grand father, my grand father and my father were all engineers, and therefore me or my brother were given no choice as to what we want to become when we grow up. I hated engineering, but ahhh well - studied engineering and left it immediately after college to work in a bank....

Always wanted to be a pilot, pursued flying as a hobby throughout my early twenties, but real life caught up....

im in brisbane Very Happy

well, i always thought that since the world relies so heavily on computers etc. there would be quite alot of jobs available - but i suppose i was wrong.

and i did think about biotech. before - but i don't do biology at school right now, and supposedly its a pre-requisite (or a 2 year jam of info in a few lectures).

and now, i highly doubt i want to do med. (mum understands but dad certainly doesn't)

thanks for the input Very Happy keep it going Razz

pyko- So you already have the answer. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT allow your dad's desires put you in a position where you will be miserable for the rest of your life. You need to follow YOUR dream!

pyko, I'm studying biotechnology now. First year university biology was pretty easy-I got distinctions in both subjects after working as 20 years as an electrician and I didn't even do my HSC. And there are no pre-requisites for the classes. The only preparation I had was a 2 week bridging class at the start of the semester that cost $75.

There's also a reasonably new degree available here called bio-informatics. I don't know the details. You could probably find out on the web-sites of the various uni's.
