Macbook: losing everything on desktop

I have a macbook and I recently did my updates and lost everything on my desktop.

When I go into my recent items I see the files previously on my desktop but so it stands to reason its still on the computer but where :-(

Hm, you can go to spotlight and look for particular files and the system
will look for it.
