Can anyone tell me what this section of the structure is? I can't imagine its a smoke stack. It looks like it allows light to enter into the top but for what purpose?

@tsarstepan,
Elevator, stairs.

@Walter Hinteler,
Taking a guess at the scale by a mere glimpse of the two windows, it would be tight to have either stairs or an elevator in that slim part of the tower. Would a ladder for an escape route be necessary for a lighthouse?

@tsarstepan,
No. Or 'yes', depending how you look at it: there are "emergency ropes/rope ladders".

@Walter Hinteler,
Now that is a unique work of architecture! So close to being perfectly symmetrical but not quite. A wonderful work of post(?)modernity.

It was planned in the early 1920's.
Interesting that the lantern is all glass, even the dome.

@Walter Hinteler,
I often get confused when the modern period ends and the so called post modern period begins. Let alone the actual definitions of the the two opposing movements. [sigh]

@tsarstepan,
The sixth of the original US lighthouses was THE CAPE HENLOPEN LIGHT in LEwes Delaware. This light, since its construction in 1786, was threatened by sea level rise ever since it was built. It survived until 1929 when a series of NorEAsters undermined the "Great Dune" on which the light was built and the rest was history. Its interesting now that, the location of the lighthouse sits in about 10 feet of water at neap tide.

I screwed up on the file protocol for thew previous pic. This is the CApe Henlopen Lighthouse in its final year or so. As the dune was marching qwest, they did move the keepers house once or twice but the light itself was left on its own. These photos of the lighthouse just before it fell are much sought after by a special cadre of LEwes ephemera collectors. They will pay big bucks for any new photos on the subject.

Comments (3) Add to My Stories The world's oldest stone lighthouse celebrated its 250th by being brought back to life with candles.

Smeaton's Tower, in Plymouth, Devon, was first lit in October 1759 to help guide ships along the treacherous coastline.
The revolutionary lighthouse was the brainchild of engineer John Smeaton and was made of 1,000 tons of granite and Portland stone and lit up by 24 giant candles.
