Australia promoted by American president...

Thinking Australians paled in horror as President Bush labelled us as "America's sheriff in the Asia-Pacific region".

Near collapse ensued when they recalled that their own Prime Minister, seemingly in a moment of madness, had, himself, some time ago, labelled us as America's DEPUTY sheriff...

The irony was not lost on Australia's consistent gadfly in the region - outgoing Malaysian leader Mahathir Mohamed (who has just labelled the US "war on terrorism" as a "war on Moslems" at a crucial regional conference.

(From the Australian Broadcasting Corporation:)

Malaysian labels Australia a US puppet

There has been a mixed reaction in Malaysia to President George W Bush's description of Australia as America's sheriff in the Asia-Pacific region.

Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has long been a strident critic of Australia's close alliance with the US and has frequently ridiculed the deputy sheriff expression.

Now that President Bush has used the catch-phrase himself there is more outrage.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Islamic Summit meeting underway in the administrative capital Putrayjaya, the Malaysian Deputy Defence Minister Shafie Apdal labelled Australia the US puppet in the region and declared that Malaysia needs no help defending itself.

Later Foreign Affairs Minister Syed Hamid attempted to play down the tension.

"I congratulate you as an Australian, I'm sure you're very happy to be promoted," he said. Embarrassed Embarrassed Embarrassed Embarrassed Embarrassed Embarrassed Embarrassed Laughing

EU Furious with Malaysian PM

Apparently he was on a quite a roll, Prime Minister Mahathir also said this at that conference:

Quote:
"We need guns and rockets, bombs and warplanes, tanks and warships for our defense," Mahathir told leaders from 57 nations gathered for a summit of the Organization of the Islamic Conference in Malaysia's new capital, Putrajaya.

"The Europeans killed 6 million Jews out of 12 million, but today the Jews rule the world by proxy," Mahathir said. "They get others to fight and die for them."

"We are up against a people who think. They survived 2000 years of pogroms not by hitting back but by thinking," Mahathir said. "They invented Socialism, Communism, human rights and democracy so that persecuting them would appear to be wrong, so that they can enjoy equal rights with others."

He's some fella, that Mahathir - just loves to rile the non-Asians. He has delighted in Australia baiting for many years.

Hafta give the Malaysians one for the promotion comment, though! That is hilarious.

We actually have a close relationship with Malaysia, in terms of trade and the number of them who study here and suchlike.

Under fire: Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad (Reuters)

Malaysia apologises for Mahathir's anti-Jewish comments

Malaysia has voiced regret over the outcry caused by its Prime Minister's remarks about Jews at an Islamic summit, saying Islam was not anti-Jewish and the problem was Israel.

"Islam has never advocated being anti anybody including the Jews," Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar said.

"The only problem with the Jews is when the State of Israel was created," Syed Hamid said, adding that Jews worked and were welcomed in Malaysia.

Western governments leaped to criticise Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's speech, made on Thursday to a summit of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC), in which he said, "today the Jews rule this world by proxy - they fight and get others to die for them".

Prime Minister John Howard said Dr Mahathir's comments were "offensive" and "dangerous".

Italy, which holds the European Union (EU) presidency, said it would propose that an EU summit on Friday formally condemn the remarks, which its foreign minister called "deplorable".

But Arab leaders said Dr Mahathir, known for his blunt ways, was simply telling it like it is.

"I don't think they are anti-Semitic at all - I think he was stating the facts, which are basically challenging in the Muslim world," Yemeni Foreign Minister Abubakr al-Qirbi said.

"There are people wanting to create trouble, invent problems that do not exist," Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher said.

"I would advise them to read the whole speech, which was a speech addressed to Muslims asking them to work hard and affirm their personality."

Syed Hamid said Dr Mahathir's remarks had been taken out of context.

He said most foreign media had missed the Prime Minister's main point, that Muslims should make peace because they could not win the Palestinian conflict through violence.

"We do not agree with suicide bombing, and he has said this," the Malaysian Minister said.

"I'm sorry he has created this adverse interpretation," he said, adding the speech criticised Muslims more for not using their heads as the Jews had done to promote their cause.

i dont think what our government in relation to the US is doing is right at all, but when the consequences of your actions are so great, none greater than on the international politics scale, then the importance of right and wrong pails in comparasim. The results of our actions have been far better for our nation than the results of doing the 'right' thing.
