Time Zone Names

I'm a wee bit curious about names for the time zones. There is of course the Greenwich mean time and in the americas at least in North America we have Atlantic, Eastern, central, mountain, pacific yukon and of course the Newfoudland time to mark the 1/2 hour difference. I hope I haven't forgotten any. In Europe, Asia, Australia are there names for your times zones. Are there different names for corresponding time zones, say in Europe and Africa or the middle east and Russia? If so could you tell me the names and why they are so named, I would be ever so happy.
Thanks,
Ceili

Ceili, India time is also a half hour difference from GMT, and Nepal's time is .25 hour difference. If one looks at a world map, the time zones are not vertical straight lines. It zig-zags all over, and some time zones overlap.

Hello, thanks for the info so far. I should have asked the question differently, I think.
What I'm curious is, for example, in Mexico - fealola are the names we use in Canada the same ones used in spanish but a translation or are they different? (I think you live in Mexico)
In India do they have names that differ from the names used in Russia?
I hope I made it clearer.

Thanks, c.i. and Walter
So then, If I read the last sites correctly, most other time zone don't have actual names. Just GMT =/-.
Is this a western phenomenon. Do people in africa call the time zones bisecting their continent british or central european timezone or do they refrain from calling them anything at all or something else altogether? Do people in Brazil call thier time zone Atlantic or is just brazilian?

Walter, how do you refer to time zones in Germany, is it the same as on the map, or another name - in german of course.
Thanks again,
Ceili

We just say "West Europopean [Summer] Time" for the one here, mostly "local time" to times in other zones (or the 'proper' name).

Since we and all of our neighbouring countries are livingin one and the same time zone, this is actually not a problem at all - naming them, I mean.

interesting,
Most of canada follows the spring ahead - fall back ritual or daylight/standard change each year but Saskatchewan, which does not change the clocks. They decided, way back in the day that farmers would be unduly affected - they didn't want to mess with milk cows routine, so they don't follow the rest of us. Does all europe change with the season or are there a few hold outs?

Well, I'm rather sure, most European countries change:

in 2003: the Sundays of 30 March and 26 October,
in 2004: the Sundays of 28 March and 31 October,
in 2005: the Sundays of 27 March and 30 October,
in 2006: the Sundays of 26 March and 29 October,
in 2007: the Sundays of 25 March and 28 October, etc.

I don't know about other continents, but here in Europe we honestly don't say just "Europe" for our time zone, but e.g. 'British Summer Time', 'West European Time' etc.
