The 2016 Olympics and Rio de Janeiro... a good thing or a bad thing?

A question especially aimed at the citizens of Chicago and its surrounding suburbs... are you disappointed or relieved that Chicago did not get the 2016 Summer Olympics, losing to Rio de Janeiro this afternoon?

For the first time in the Modern Games' history, the Olympics are going to be held in South America. That announcement was just made in Copenhagen, where the International Olympic Committee has been meeting.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was awarded the 2016 Summer Games.

Chicago, as we've been reporting, failed to make the IOC's cut -- despite a last-minute, unprecedented push from President Barack Obama.

Guess it depends on whether or not you're a homeless child.

Aside from that... I think it Rio will do the tradition proud.

I happy it's not in Chicago, but since I'm in the suburbs my opinion doesn't count (according to joefromchicago).

@tsarstepan,
Good timezone for US watching, especially after the last two summer games.

@maporsche,
I am so glad that New York lost the last summer Olympics race to Beijing. In fact, I wrote to the mayor and to 3 or 4 other elected officials to keep it away from the city.

I added the Chicagoan suburbs to the question because you too would be deeply affected: tax wise, traffic wise, state budget wise, pollution wise if your down wind from Chicago, etc.... So the Chicago's loss of the Olympics is actually a Win win in my eyes.

I never said your opinion doesn't count. I merely pointed out that, when you expressed relief that your "home town" would not host the Olympics, you were actually speaking as a suburbanite. As far as I know, the IOC didn't consider a bid from Schaumburg or Naperville or whatever bumfuck little hamlet you live in.
