William Safire, Political Columnist and Oracle of Language, Dies at 79

Did not agree with his politics, but man could he write. Loved his language columns.

@jespah,
Nobody agreed with his politics all the time because the man definitely marched to his own drummer, was loyal to no party or politicized ideology, and never compromised his convictions. I put a brief tribute to him on the Conservatism thread, but I am happy that you memorialized him here Jes. He was one of the last of the old journalistic dinosaurs who exercised real journalism and there are too few left.

The world is poorer for his passing.

@jespah,
Quite frankly, I hadn't realized he was still alive until I heard the news of his demise. Interesting person, certainly. He displayed the kind of erudition and intellectualism that so many people today would try and hide. It's just not hip to be an intellectual these days. Elitist, don'cha'know.
